Extreme Weather Response

Extreme Weather Response

During periods of extreme cold, Al Rashid Foundation of Canada steps forward as a place of refuge, care, and compassion for those most vulnerable in our city. Rooted in Islamic principles of mercy, dignity, and service to humanity, our Extreme Weather Response reflects a long-standing commitment to supporting the broader Edmonton community in times of urgent need.

What the Extreme Weather Response Is

When temperatures drop to dangerous levels, Al Rashid Mosque partners with the City of Edmonton and community agencies to provide temporary overnight shelter space for individuals experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity.

This response is activated only during extreme weather events, complementing, not replacing, municipal emergency services. Our role is to offer a warm, safe environment where people can rest, stay protected from life-threatening conditions, and be treated with dignity.

What We Provide

During an Extreme Weather Response activation, the mosque may offer:
  • Safe indoor overnight shelter
  • Warmth and protection from extreme cold
  • Access to washrooms and basic amenities
  • A respectful, welcoming environment grounded in compassion and care
Our facilities are adapted temporarily to support this response, and the program operates in close coordination with City-led emergency protocols.

A Values-Driven Response

This work is not new to Al Rashid. Service to those in need has always been central to our faith and our history.

Islamic teachings emphasize caring for neighbours, protecting human life, and standing with those facing hardship. Our Extreme Weather Response is a practical expression of these values one that aligns closely with the shared ethics of many faith traditions and civic partners across Edmonton.

Working in Partnership

Al Rashid Mosque does not operate this response alone.
We work in coordination with:

  • The City of Edmonton
  • Community outreach teams
  • Emergency and social service partners

This collaborative approach ensures that responses are safe, coordinated, and aligned with city-wide emergency planning, while allowing faith-based spaces to meaningfully contribute where they are able.

A Shared Responsibility

The Extreme Weather Response is one small part of a much larger ecosystem of care in Edmonton. It reflects what’s possible when faith institutions, municipalities, and community partners work together toward a common goal: protecting human life and dignity.
