Marriage Services

Islamic Marriage (Nikah) at Al Rashid Mosque

Marriage is a sacred commitment rooted in faith, responsibility, and mutual care. Through Marriage Services, Al Rashid Mosque offers Islamic marriage (nikah) services in accordance with Islamic principles and the legal framework of Alberta.

Marriage services are provided with care, clarity, and discretion. Couples are guided through a defined process to ensure that religious requirements, documentation, and expectations are clearly understood before a marriage is performed.

Marriage by Appointment Only

Islamic marriage contracts (nikah) at Al Rashid Mosque are performed by appointment only.

Couples must complete all required steps and submit documentation before an appointment with the Imam can be scheduled.

Step 1: Obtain a Marriage Licence

Before meeting with the Imam or requesting an Islamic marriage contract, couples must apply for and obtain a valid Alberta Marriage Licence from any Alberta Registry office.

Once the marriage licence is issued and submitted to the mosque front desk, an appointment for the Islamic marriage can be scheduled. Marriage appointments must take place within three months of the licence issue date.

Step 2: Prepare Required Documents

All individuals must bring the following documents and information:

  • Photocopies of valid government-issued photo identification
  • Two witnesses (family members are acceptable) or an approved alternative
  • An official Alberta Marriage Licence
  • The bride must be accompanied by her Wali (guardian), such as her father, brother, or another eligible guardian
  • Reverts must provide proof of declaration of faith
  • Divorced individuals must provide a valid divorce certificate issued by the court
  • Couples must book pre-marriage counselling with the Imam

Incomplete documentation may delay or prevent the scheduling of a marriage appointment.

Step 3: Pre-Marriage Counselling

Pre-marriage counselling is a required part of the marriage process at Al Rashid Mosque. This counselling session provides couples with guidance on:
  • Islamic responsibilities and rights within marriage
  • Expectations, communication, and mutual understanding
  • The religious framework of marriage
Counselling helps ensure that couples enter marriage with clarity, intention, and informed consent.

Marriage Contract Conditions (Nikah)

An Islamic marriage (nikah) is a binding religious contract entered into with clarity, consent, and mutual responsibility. As part of the marriage process at Al Rashid Mosque, the following conditions must be clearly understood and agreed upon before the nikah is performed.
Mutual Consent
The marriage must be entered into freely and willingly by both parties. Consent from the bride and groom is a fundamental requirement of a valid Islamic marriage and will be confirmed as part of the process.
Mahr (Dowry)
The mahr is a mandatory component of the Islamic marriage contract. It is a gift from the groom to the bride and is her exclusive right. The amount and terms of the mahr must be agreed upon by both parties prior to the nikah and clearly stated in the marriage contract.
Witnesses
A valid Islamic marriage requires witnesses. Witnesses may be family members and must meet Islamic requirements. The presence of witnesses helps ensure transparency, accountability, and public acknowledgement of the marriage.
Wali (Guardian)
The presence of a wali (guardian) for the bride is required in accordance with Islamic principles. The wali is typically the father, brother, or another eligible guardian, and plays an important role in safeguarding the bride’s interests during the marriage process.

Marriage Contract Conditions (Pre-Nuptial Conditions)

Couples may choose to include specific conditions in their Islamic marriage contract, provided these conditions are permissible within Islamic teachings. These conditions may relate to matters such as education, employment, residence, or other mutually agreed-upon considerations.

Conditions included in the Islamic marriage contract are religious in nature and form part of the nikah agreement. While these conditions are meaningful within an Islamic framework, they are not automatically legally binding under Canadian law.

Couples who wish for any marriage contract conditions to have legal standing are encouraged to seek independent legal advice to understand how such conditions may be documented or recognized within the civil legal system.

All conditions must be discussed, mutually agreed upon, and clearly documented before the marriage is performed.

Important Information to Consider

  • Couples are responsible for ensuring that all information provided at the Alberta Registry office is accurate. If an error is discovered, it must be corrected before the marriage ceremony.
  • The Imam will complete and submit the religious marriage documentation to the Alberta Government.
  • Al Rashid Mosque issues a temporary certificate as a courtesy.
  • A government-issued marriage certificate is not issued automatically. Couples must apply separately through Alberta Registries to obtain an official government certificate.
