Interfaith & Civic Engagement

Interfaith projects

Al Rashid Mosque actively builds bridges with other faith communities to foster understanding, respect, and cooperation. A longstanding initiative in this area is “A Common Word Alberta,” a Christian-Muslim dialogue series in which Al Rashid leaders participate annually alongside Christian partners in panel discussions, conversations, and shared experiences. These events create safe spaces to learn from one another, explore shared values, and strengthen peaceful relationships among faith groups.
The mosque also opens its doors for guided interfaith tours and visits, welcoming schools, groups, and individuals of all backgrounds to learn about Islam, the history of Canada’s first mosque, and the values Muslims share with their neighbours.

Dawa initiatives

Al Rashid Mosque’s Islamic outreach is woven into its educational and community programs. From regular “New to Islam” information sessions and Qur’an-focused learning to youth mentorship and prayer gatherings, the mosque provides opportunities for both Muslims and non-Muslims to learn about Islam in an open, accessible way.

Educational tours, open houses, and community programs also serve as informal dawah opportunities, encouraging respectful dialogue, curiosity, and shared understanding about Islamic beliefs and practices.

Support to relief campaigns

Al Rashid Mosque has a history of stepping up in times of community need:
  • Winter homelessness support: During periods of extreme cold, the mosque has opened its doors as an emergency shelter, offering warmth, meals, and basic necessities to people experiencing homelessness in partnership with local organizations. This service has welcomed individuals of all faiths, underscoring the mosque’s role as a community resource in times of crisis.
  • Emergency relief funds: Through its donation pages and campaigns, Al Rashid solicits support for emergency relief funds such as the Palestine Fund, which provides humanitarian aid in times of crisis.
These actions reflect a belief that helping those in hardship, Muslim or not, is a central part of communal responsibility and compassion.

Anti Racism and Islamophobia work

Al Rashid Mosque has been involved in efforts to respond to Islamophobia and support victims of hate-motivated attacks. Through partnerships with organizations such as the Olive Tree Foundation and the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), the mosque supports programs designed to provide therapy, counselling, legal support, and emergency assistance to survivors of Islamophobic incidents.
These programs aim to help individuals heal from trauma, access resources not covered by insurance, and feel supported by community networks during difficult times.
Al Rashid’s visibility and engagement also contribute to raising awareness and fostering dialogue about Islamophobia, working with civic partners to advocate for safer, more inclusive public spaces and shared understanding across diverse communities.

Restorative Justice

Al Rashid Mosque is committed to supporting the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) in addressing the spiritual, mental, and social needs of Muslims in custody through a comprehensive and culturally responsive approach. Our work is guided by a strategic policy framework focused on Promoting Wellness and Independence for individuals and their families, both during incarceration and throughout reintegration into the community.

This approach is delivered through a number of interconnected initiatives, including:
  • Development of a corrections-specific clinical assessment tool to better identify the spiritual, mental health, and reintegration needs of Muslim individuals in custody.
  • Staff and volunteer training and education focused on aging populations, halfway house transitions, and health-related challenges commonly faced during and after incarceration.
  • Enhancement of a Peer Support Model, ensuring individuals in custody have access to faith-based support, mentorship, and guidance from trained peers.
  • Active participation in various advisory and community committees to advocate for equitable services and culturally appropriate care for Muslims in custody.
  • Provision of counselling, mentorship, Islamic educational materials, and spiritual care, with a strong emphasis on rehabilitation, dignity, and successful reintegration into the community upon release.
  • Through these initiatives, Al Rashid Mosque seeks to foster resilience, accountability, and a sense of belonging, while supporting CSC’s broader objectives of rehabilitation and public safety.
